His doom was se.tied from the motuentlof his arrest. We clip from thn Kichmond Hnle the following ;n re gard to the execution : At 13 o'clock Sirgt. Smifh tell Clu verius that the (loytrnar bad refused to interfere, and notified him that he had i Bly a few minutes to live, and he. must bi rcaly for his execution. Cluvcrius exchanged the fhiniliar irray suit lor the new mU of black vh;cb had been purchased for him. lie was insisted by Deputy Sergfrjnt C M. Johnson and Mr. Dann. cnc.id the ileath watch. After his toilet had been arranged. Dr. Hatcher q Acred up an impressive prayer. Mr Smith entered the room at Ove minutes to I o'clock and informed the- prisoner that bis time 'r least emotion, he simply remarked, I am ready to go with you." ' It was an awful and solemn moment ) when Cluveriu3 walked from tho cell ( in which be had so long been con hoed to tho scaffold upou which bo was to pay tbo penalty lor his crime. The iron nerve which-sustained him thro1 the trial clung to him to the very last, and unfaltering he walked t his death. As ho was passing down the sleeps on his way to the scaffold the vast crowd in the Jail alley caught sizht of him and the shout weatup from a thousand throats, "Y'onder be is; yopderhe is." Tho prisoner never raised his eyes bat kept them upon his feet. Sometimes ho closed them, but he did not keep ihem shnt long, lie appeared in deep tbougLt. and lor tbe first time, perhaps, he lully realized that he was going to die and that bt life would quickly ebb away upon tbe scaffold. His bro.ber was not there lo comfort him in the hour id his greatest trial, nor was his devoted aunt, Mrs. Tunstall, near his side. - His father and mother did not come to bid him a final farewell, as the - trip from their country home was too much for their feeble constitutions. The prisoner was there in the clutches ot the law, and the hour for hi3 execution was hastening. As be wended his way to the scaffold down the long jail yad tho eyes of at least two hundredpcrsons were dirccU ed to him He never-looked to the rishl or to the left, but walked along without the least break down. Slowly but steadily he ascended the rcaffold. S:ep after step brought bim nearer and nearer the top. He walked direct to the centre of the tiap dooratid lock his stand. His face was flushed and his lips kept quiverihg.ut his leg never trembled in the least. He wore new shoeA and a water-proof cloak reacm tcgdowa to his knees was wrapped around him It was an awful moment when he stood quietly awaiting death. There was a solemu stillness in tho crowd around tho' scaffold. The murderer stood like a statue, and tho people near bim awaited breathlessly for the fatal moment. When Sergeant Smith finish . d reading the order ot tho cou"t Dr. Hatcber knelt and prayed. After Dr. Hatcher finished pra ing be stepped to the edge of the -scaffold. d. addressing the crowd beloWj, said: "I am guested by tbe prisoner to ntter ibis one word and that is, in" this mo ment of his death he carries with hini no feeling of ill-will towards any man ou earth. That is all." Then advanc ing to the prisonerlDr. Hatcher grasped Ciuverius's hand and aTd. -God blesi joq." Tho prisoner shook hinds with no one else on the scaffold.
